Field Log // Most deserts are composed of quartz, but this 275 mile stretch of tumbling sand is gypsum and calcium sulfate. The terrain is easier on Betty’s well-tread tires, as it reflects sunlight rather than absorbing it and swiftly evaporates surface moisture. It is splendidly cool to the touch.

Atop a dune, we watch the beacon bleed across the sky and ponder the mystery of this phenomenon. The next morning, a dispatch informs us of military activity above a distant ocean. .
